Start Date: Tuesday 4th October 2011, 09:10 AEDT (UTC +11); 11:10 NZDT (UTC +13)

Status update on Hurricane Electric DDOS attack:

09:10 – Traffic drops noticed on USA transit ingress points. Calls placed to Hurricane Electric NOC.
09:15 – Hurricane Electric NOC advise they are under yet another DDOS attack that is targeting network equipment and causing control plane issues throughout their backbone.
09:25 – All outbound transit traffic moved from Hurricane Electric to Global Crossing
09:38 – Hurricane Electric transit links turned down to try and stop impact to Vocus customer traffic
10:20 – Continued observation that not all traffic had recovered via Global Crossing.
11:00 – Confirmation received that all routes were being received by Global Crossing properly but unable to explain lower than expected received traffic. No noticeable performance impact is observed but traffic levels across the entire network are not at expected levels.
11:17 – Peering session with Hurricane Electric re-enabled. Ingress levels are still not back to expected levels. Hurricane advise they are still working on mitigating the full impact of the attack on their network.
11:35 – We are still observing BGP flaps on Hurricane Electric peering sessions at Internet exchange points in the USA.

Our current status is that outbound transit traffic flows are all using Global Crossing as a preferred path but we are still observing less inbound traffic than expected.

We are working with both providers to establish the exact reasons for this which may range from traffic moving to other providers due to less preferred routing or less capacity available via the Global Crossing network than via Hurricane Electric.

We will continue to provide updates on this issue as new information comes to hand.

Regards

Start Date: Wednesday 5th October 2011, 04:00 AEDT (UTC +11); 06:00 NZDT (UTC +13) End Date: Wednesday 5th October 2011, 06:00 AEDT (UTC +11); 08:00 NZDT (UTC +13)

During the above window, The Southern Cross Cable Network will be relocating fibre on Segment F3 (Hillsboro to Nedonna). There is currently no impact to traffic and the relocation is expected to take up to 10 minutes. As Vocus’ circuits have protection on this path, there will be a 50 msec protection switch, plus loss of protection whilst the maintenance takes place. Other than the protection switch, we do not anticipate any impact to customer services.

Please contact the RackCentral NOC should you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
